33 weeks

33 Weeks: 49 days to go

Your baby now weighs about 4.2 pounds / 2 kilograms and measures approximately 17 inches/ 44 centimetres from head to toe.

Your baby should already be getting ready for delivery by turning upside-down -- his head should be pointing down. Your doctor or midwife will be paying careful attention to your baby's position in the coming weeks -- some babies do decide to turn back round again. Your baby's skull is still quite pliable and not completely joined, in part so he can ease out of the relatively narrow birth canal. But the bones in the rest of his body are hardening. Your baby's brain is also growing rapidly by pregnancy 33 weeks, contributing to a growth spurt of your baby's head.

Your baby's skin is also gradually becoming less red and wrinkled. If you were to take a snapshot of your baby you might notice their skin is slowly changing from reddish in color to bright pink as your baby accumulates more layers of fat under their skin.

You may notice rhythmic movements across your belly now. This could mean your baby has a case of the hiccups.

With the exception of crying, your baby is capable of doing everything that a newborn baby will do. Your baby is restricted now inside of the uterus, but still can kick and move. Your baby sleeps alot of the time, just as newborn babies do. Your baby's eyes move in the manner of REM sleep and researchers believe that babies can dream vividly in utero. When your baby is awake, she is listening, feeling and learning. There are billions of neurons in the brain that make trillions of connections.

If your baby were to be born now, the lungs would probably be strong enough to function properly, but your baby may still need extra care from specially trained doctors and nurses.

Your baby's eyes open during alert times and close during sleep. The eye color is usually blue, regardless of the permanent color as pigmentation is not fully developed. The final formation of eye pigmentation requires exposure to light and usually happens a few weeks after birth.

32 Week Doctor's Appointment

My 32 week doctor's appointment went well on Thursday, her heart beat was 160. We go back on March 5th for another ultrasound, just to "check in" on her and see how she's grown.

Our CPR/Safety class went good too, we learned a lot and feel a little more prepared (and maybe a little more paranoid as well)!

32 weeks

Week 32: 56 days & counting....

How your baby's growing: By now, your baby weighs 3.75 pounds and is about 16.7 inches long, taking up a lot of space in your uterus. You're gaining about a pound a week and roughly half of that goes right to your baby. In fact, she'll gain a third to half of her birth weight during the next 7 weeks as she fattens up for survival outside the womb. She now has toenails, fingernails, and real hair (or at least respectable peach fuzz). Her skin is becoming soft and smooth as she plumps up in preparation for birth.

So we're hanging in there during the countdown, both of us are getting very anxious, nervous, and excited. We have a lot to plan for and think about over the next few weeks to prepare for another person to come into our life. It's quite scary to think that it won't be just the two of us anymore, but at the same time, we are very ready to become a family of three!

Our childbirth classes are going good; the first class we learned some really good breathing/relaxation techniques and talked about some of the basic birth plan choices and the pros/cons to each. Last night we got to watch a video on the first stage of labor including all three phases, and also got good (and intimidating) information on contractions. We also did a pain threshold test by holding ice in a closed fist for a couple of minutes while incorporating our relaxation and "mind trick" excercises. (If only it were going to be that easy)!!!

We go back to the Doctor on Thursday and take our Infant/Child CPR class that night. I also have my first baby shower on Saturday, so it is a busy week. I haven't been sleeping well at night, so my days are quite tiring, but I've been trying to walk and do Prenatal Yoga, which helps a little. I have also noticed some swelling over the last couple of weeks, so that's a sure sign we are getting close to the end. The heating pad has become my best friend and getting foot rubs are almost as good as eating chocolate!

The Nursery-Before

Here was the start of a long hard weekend at work. A bare empty room ready to be transformed! Daddy and Grandpa put in 2 very long days of hard work and here are some shots of the "work in progress."

The Nursery-After

So here is the finished project with just a few little things left to do....

30 week Doctors Appointment

I saw the Doctor today and had a good visit. Gammie came along for support and got to hear a very loud and strong heart beat. Her growth is still right on track as well as mommy's weight gain and blood pressure. We start the first of five childbirth classes on Monday, so that will really make it feel like the big day is right around the corner.

30 week update

30 weeks:

How big is your baby?
Your baby has now grown to be 14 ¾ inches long and weighs about 3 pounds.

What is happening with your baby?
As your baby continues to grow, he/she takes up a larger portion of your uterus. You may not feel that your body can handle your growing baby, but it will compensate by allowing your uterus to extend underneath your rib cage.
Your baby’s eyes are becoming more mature, and now he/she can tell the difference between light and dark. Babies at 30 weeks can even follow a light source with their eyes. Once your baby is born, he/she will spend a great deal of time with their eyes closed. This is completely normal. Newborns only have the ability to focus on objects a few inches from their face. While “normal” adult vision is 20/20, a newborn’s vision is 20/400.
